On the 12th of May IEEE GOLD Oulu organized a Professional Telecommunication Lectures. The aim was to provide students, young scientists, postdoctoral researchers and industry representatives the unique opportunity to get familiar with recent research results related to cognitive wireless communication networks. High-qualified lectures provided the main theoretical tools, describing the relevant solutions and methods, and addressing the problems still open in these areas.

In addition, Rafal Sliz has introduced to participants the IEEE organization and recent achievements and activities of IEEE/GOLD section in Finland.

After the lectures there was time for the social part of the event, during which participants could get to know each other and share their ideas and experience.

During the last weekend of October IEEE GOLD Oulu Finland together with Infotech and IEEE Student Branch Oulu organized a Grand Challenge Workshop in Sanginjoki. It was a two day event (30 – 31.10.2009) during which participants could gain knowledge about integration of different fields of technology.

Event was opened by IEEE GOLD Finland Oulu Activities chairman Rafal Sliz, who welcomed participants and briefly presented the contents of the seminar. Next Marek Skowron showed a presentation about benefits of IEEE for its members and deeply explained the IEEE Student Transition and Elevation Partnership (STEP) program.

After those presentations there was time for invited key note speakers. Professors Heli Jantunen and Olli Silvén made their presentations and shared their experience with working in co-operation with different laboratories from university and beyond, which attendees found very interesting.

Following the lectures there was time for the social part of the event, during which participants could get to know each other and share their ideas and experience, most of which took time in sauna.

Second day was dedicated to group work. People were divided into four teams with team leaders from different fields. Task for each team was to invent a device or solution which would integrate different fields of technology. There were no strict boundaries for the project in order not to limit teams with their concepts; however there were few aspects that they had to take into consideration, e.g. power supply, electronics, interfacing, connectivity, etc. All of the teams came up with innovative and useful solutions that could make out life easier in future.

In addition, this even was just a first step in integration of different engineering fields to make our scientific work more innovative. Moreover, after a very convincing STEP presentation we are certain that recently graduated students members will stay in the IEEE organization.

Next, Janne Lindqvist, a researcher in systems security and privacy at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering gave a talk about the research topics of the Data Communications Software research group. He gave some interesting examples about how much personal information leaks from a regular network connected computer, without the user realising it.

The last speaker was Nie Pin, also a researcher in the Data Communication Software group, and recently active with IEEE GOLD. First he presented the NordSecMob Master’s Programme in Security and Mobile Computing and then gave two very interesting demos with the assistance of Zhihua Jin:

• wireless sensors that could by themselves adapt the transmission power to the optimal amount, thus preserving battery power
• session transfer of streaming video from one computer to another, e.g. from a fixed computer with a big screen to a smaller mobile device for traveling

What: High-tech Entrepreneurship days
Where: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in Oulu
When: Mon 20, Wed 22, Th 23 April 2009

The aim of the entrepreneurship days is to provide information and education to entrepreneurs and to assist them in building new technology companies. The event will give a basic knowledge and important case examples related to entrepreneurship. The educational part will cover the basics of entrepreneurship as well as current and future trends.

In addition, the event gives an excellent opportunity for networking, searching for new business opportunities, and meeting the organizations dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship. The presentation language during the two first days is Finnish, during the last day it is both Finnish and English. The activities are grouped into morning session (7.30 to 9.30) and afternoon session (11.00 to 13.00). Thursday is the main day of the event with only one session from 13.00 to 17.00 .
