Finland Section Student and Gold Activities

Finland GOLD has won a 2011 IEEE GOLD Affinity Group Hall of Fame Award! The MGA judges were impressed by the record of activities and, despite fierce competition, selected GOLD Finland as one of three recipients in the inaugural year of this award.
As individuals they’re mere faces that people pass by daily along the University hallways, mere manikins possessing the outer characteristics of engineers, looking smart, focused, and playing around with gadgets. But unlike the typical engineers, these individuals were linked by something more, something going beyond their mere appearance. To say that they were united by a cause, would be like saying that a lion is a big cat. No, they were in it for the thrill, the adventure the excitement of going where others have just dreamed. Like the pioneers on the expedition to conquer Mt. Everest, this well-knit team of flourishing professionals wanted to make a difference, realizing that it can be achieved with cooperation and good team effort. It is known secret what has happened in Oulu. This team has contributed immensely to the visibility of IEEE in Finland and to Finland’s IEEE gaining renown all over the world. Our members have progressed from local to wider regional responsibilities (Rafal Sliz was nominated to R8 GOLD Committee), in addition to making multiple publications in different IEEE media (GOLDRush, R8 Newsletter etc.).

IEEE GOLD Finland and the Department of Computer Systems at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) organize the Seventh Annual Mini Conference on Scientific Publishing 2011 (MCSP’11).

The MCSP’11 is an excellent opportunity for students to improve and qualify their skills on the area of scientific publishing and presentations.

For this purpose, the MCSP’11 creates a fantastic forum for under-graduate and post-graduate students of different areas of research to learn and practice publishing, reviewing, presenting, and writing of
scientific papers.
Thanks to IEEE GOLD Finland a network with future colleagues in business and academic worlds where students and researchers meet IEEE members in a relaxed atmosphere.

A GOLDRush Newsletter in December 2010 issue has published two articles related to IEEE GOLD Finland Section!

Presentation skills are one of the keys for success. Particularly for the officials operating at the industrial and academic worlds, it is vitally important to be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively, using a variety of tools and mediums. The only way to improve these skills is through practice!

IEEE Day – 7th of October 2010
The inaugural edition of IEEE Day was held 7th of October 2010, to celebrate the achievements of IEEE members in Finland and worldwide. IEEE Day recognizes IEEE members – past, present, and future. The GOLD members together with Student Branch Oulu organized an event at the University of Oulu main hall from 10 to 14. Event provided an exceptional opportunity to recognize existing members, and introduce potential members to IEEE and electrical engineering.
The main point of the event was the helicopter flying competition for participants and visitors. Winners of the competition got the high quality T-shirts and souvenirs with IEEE logo. In addition, stand with coffee, candies, promotional materials and possibility to immediate join IEEE were available for all participants.

Results and pictures

Vulcanalia Oulu is one of the biggest events organized by Oulu University Student Union focused on young students. The main purpose of this event was to get familiar students with active organizations at University. The IEEE GOLD and Student Branch concentrated efforts on convincing young people to join IEEE organization. A GOLD members presented the professional aspects of IEEE organization, while Student Branch took care of networking and social activities in the evening.
